Mark Clattenburg

Posted by Tony Barrett on October 22, 2007 9:17 AM |

Funny how you see the things you want to see isn't it?
On Saturday Mark Clattenburg assumed the status of pantomime villain for the blue half of the city - the new Clive Thomas, anyone - when he cost them certain victory over that horrible, nasty, cheating shower from across the park.
Their anger was fired by two major incidents, the first being Dirk Kuyt's Jackie Chan style lunge at Phil Neville which should have resulted in a red card for the Dutchman.
But the second one was perhaps even more controversial than Evertonians and the national media would have us believe.
Yes, Carragher did haul Joleon Lescott down in the box. There is no doubt about that.
But if you look at the replay again you will find that James McFadden's long throw into the box was illegal because he had one foot off the ground.

Somehow, the impartial Andy Gray, with his magic box of tricks at his disposal, failed to spot this.
Luckily, my mate Robbie, didn't and after taking his word for it I decided to check it out and discovered that it was clearly a foul throw.
Had that been spotted there would have been no controversy over a penalty not being given, the game would have simply restarted with a throw in to Liverpool.
I look forward to Mr Gray pointing this out in the near future..............

Congratulations to Mark Clattenburg on being the latest member of the the'ifirraddenerbinfer....' Hall of Fame.
Ps YES Everton should have had 12 penalties.
YES the entire Liverpool team and management team should have been sent off
YES Gerrard put a gun to the ref's head and MADE him send poor old Hibbert off for his professional foul
YES I'm still laughing my b****cks off - unlucky Blueboys!!

Well done Mr Barrett

i'll enjoy pointing that out for the next few days, is right!

this from d brown a mate of mine which sums up my thoughts perfectly:

On his "last word" last night Andy Gray was banging on about Kuyt had to go because even though he did not make contact with Neville the "intent" was there. Funny how in August 06 when SG was awarded a pen on the opening day of the season against Sheff Utd and the ref accepted there was no contact but that he gave the pen for the "intent" of the defender Gray banged on about what a load of rubbish that was and how can you know what the players intent was and if there is no contact it is not a foul!

anyway - looking forward to hearing "kung fu kuyting" being sung in the near future!

Good point tony, and the point about the 'intent' also!!

Another thing, was it just me, or was Kuyt NOT OFFSIDE in the first half, when he slotted it past Howard? Im sure i remember at the time being sure he wasnt!!?? Can anybody else clear that up?

OK- fair shout Tony. However, whilst we're on about clarity of decision- we should also highlight that the (1st) penalty kick (from the "foul" on Mr G) shouldn't have counted either- there was a red foot in the box when the ball was kicked.

Call me a pedant blue nose... but I believe a bit of discretion and bias to let the game flow is needed in games such as the derby.

We can only hope we dont get him again...

Well done tho boys.

clutching at straws or what? if we're going to get technical, then technically gerrard threw himself on the floor. technically neville's left leg could have ended up at the back of the lower bullens, technically, carragher could claim to be the new giant haystacks with his impressive bear hug manoeuvre.

Istvan Kozma wrote...

Technically, Towen, your post could be interpreted as a bitter blue rant on a liverpool blog after losing your cup final on home soil.
It can't be, though, because the blues don't care what the redshite say, do they?

Phil P wrote...

Well they do say bad referreeing decisions balance themselves out over the course of the season, so we've got our payback over the Rob Styles incident.

The fact that yin and yang balanced themselves out for us in the Derby at the home of the bitters is even sweeter!!

Towen wrote...

tecnically kozma, if it's our cup final then why were the liverpool players dancing round the pitch at full time like little kids on christmas day?

Jimmy Grant wrote...

Towen,

nobodys saying that we dont care about it, oh belive me, we do, but people say that this is your cup final, because its the biggest game you are going to play in all season. If people think that Gerrard would rather go down, and pass the ball to someone else to score via a pen in the derby, rather than staying on his feet and scoring himself....then i have no more to say. Come on lads, yes we were fortunate to get the decisions, but we picked up the 2 points on sat (although we deserved the 3), that we dropped against chelsea. You'll get a BIG decision at some point this season too that will turn 1 point....into 3!! We'll see then if theres a petition being made to get a ref banned forever from the league?

Hi! Good spot that, and by the way just finished your match report, got to tell you, it was a great debut, reminded me of Baros's against Bolton, hopefully though you'll end up with a brighter future though!

Towen wrote...

i'm not bothered if clattenburg gets a ban or not (which incidentally he has for this weekend). rather than go into hiding the man needs to come out and apologise for his mistakes. players and managers are thrown into the spotlight when they get it drastically wrong so why should the refs get away with it?

Istvan Kozma wrote...

Technically, Towen, we enjoy winning The Derby more than any other domestic fixture (especially at Woodison).
Believe it or not, though, our Cup Finals tend to be ACTUAL Cup Finals. As your lot no longer know what one of those is, you give added weight to the Derby - a back handed compliment to us really.
And the fact that your lack of participation in any truly big games causes your lot to concern yourselves with the TYPE of trophy we're consistently winning (or not) only adds to our amusement.
I know this isn't pleasant reading for a bitter Blue but sometimes the truth hurts!

Liam Knowles wrote...

Tonys mate Robbie: Myth Buster.
I'm sure Mr. Gray will point it out, as he was so keen to point out Garcia's goal "never crossed the line" against Chelsea using dodgy virtual evidence.

Whats also gone unnoticed is that Gerrard invented a new rule on Saturday. From now on, if your the last defender and you bring the attacker down in the box when he's about to score (get this) its a penalty AND you get sent off!

I think a new rule should be invented for hand balls on the line though. The attacking team should be given the choice to a) send the player off and take the penalty OR b) take the goal and the player stays on the pitch.
Had we missed the 2nd pen on Sat we would have gained no advantage from playing against 9 men for 2mins, meaning Neville would have cost us 2 points through blatent cheating. Either that or just give him a 6 match ban!

Good point by Sean there aswell, I'm sure it's nothing to do with him being bitter!

Tony,

I believe certain violations happen throughout a match that officials miss because they are minimal .

Putting aside my Blue loyalties,
The true issue regarding Clatter-bitch is that completely blatant offences were brushed aside by him in this match and by ref's in other games week in week out, that is the main worry in my eyes.
Another interesting point for me is the different mentality adopted by the majority of reds now that an 'injustice' has gone in their favour. After crying to the high heavens regarding the penalty decision in the Chelsea Fixture at anfield!! Swings & Roundabouts aye!
As sure as the 'Rafa bullshit' after each match, the reds will be on the 'wrong end' of a major refereeing decision sometime in the near future!!
I for one will be winding up my red mates yet again as they have done to me after this weekend!!
Thats Football for Ya!!

"Everton manager David Moyes on Johnson's re-taken penalty:

"If he gives a foul for people entering the box he should do it again.
"For the first one there were more Metalist players in the area than Everton, so to punish us seemed harsh".

Everton manager David Moyes - AKA The Man Who Doesn't Like To Talk About Referees - talking about the referee of their recent game against high-flying Metalist Kharkiv, in which Metalist had 2 players ordered off and Everton were awarded 2 penalties - 1 of which had to be re-taken - and which net yielded 0 goals.

Given Everton's form from the spot this season, would they have converted on Saturday? I somehow feel his post-match comment this weekend, that he would have ignored the other 'errors' (eg Hibbert being sent off for bringing down a player when he was the last man) may not have been borne out if Pepe had pushed said last minute spot kick round the post.

This is the man who sent a DVD to the FA last year for penalty decisions Everton didn't receive. I don't believe he sent similar after the derby last year, when Hibbert sprang across goal to palm an effort out which would have made the score 2-1 when Liverpool were pressing. He was too busy basking, as the fact it wasn't given allowed Everton to ultimately add enough gloss at the finish to prompt the commission of a very different DVD, to bemoan injustices on that particular day. Read up on Carra and Rafa's comments after that game with an open mind Blues fans - Toffees would likely still have won, but would it have been your biggest derby win in 80 odd years and would you swap that for a point this weekend ?

Rafa's comments on Saturday about diving were for me disappointing, but aggrieved Evertonians should be equally honest about their boss. Pretending only your rivals are guilty of myopia and becoming rabid about it solves precisely nada.

fair comment To - but if we're pointing out things, Kuyt handballed on the edge of the box, in the run-up to the Neville 'save'too ... so that was still 1-1 ... you're missing the real story though mate: Gerrard getting a fellow Scouser sent off in the derby was a disgrace, I can handle that he 'professionally' won the pen but his comment to the ref was wrong, no matter how you dress it up ...

Well, Considering Liverpool had 1/2 foul throws as well from what I remember, your little rant about that is pathetic.

If we want to go on things like that, If Gerrard never opened his gob to Clattenburg, Hibbert would of only got a yellow card.

K thanks, bye.

You lot started it with Alan Handsen, Towen. It's an old "Ifirradennerbinfer...(put in 'why the reds stopped the blues being the best team on the planet caption of your choice here)" favourite after all.
P.s. haven't Everton got any blogs / forums where you can actually talk about EVERTON, or are we more interesting? It's just that after hearing the words to your favourite chant every game, I thought that you didn't care for what your beloved red bretheren have to say?
