Why Pompey Is The Biggest Test So Far

Posted by Tony Barrett on September 10, 2007 9:16 AM |

Four games, three wins and one draw. Ten points on the board and Liverpool are top of the league for the first time since the days when El Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao "graced" Anfield.
Starts to the season don't come much better than this. Not unless you go back to the 1987-88 season when Liverpool went 29 games unbeaten before losing at Goodison Park of all places.
So far, we have seen Aston Villa beaten at Villa Park (something I can't see many other teams doing this season), Sunderland battered and comfortably beaten at the Stadium of Light and Derby County thoroughly demolished at Anfield.
Only Chelsea have taken any points off the Reds and that was only because Rob Styles went all Mr Magoo on us and gave them one of the most ridiculous penalties you've ever seen.

Despite undeservedly dropping two points in that game, it is undoubtedly a case of so far so good for Rafa Benitez's men.
But Saturday is the big test. A game which could give us the truest indication yet of just how far this Liverpool team can go.
Portsmouth at Fratton Park is always one of the most difficult assignments of the season as Liverpool have found out to their cost many times in years gone by.
Go there and win this time around and it sends out a message to the rest of the Premiership that the Reds really are coming up the hill boys.
A draw would by no means be a bad result even if it would probably mean we would lose top spot come Saturday evening.
But a defeat could easily cost confidence and lead to our rivals wondering if we really do have what it takes to be champions.
Make no mistake about it, championships are won and lost at places like Fratton Park.
Teams like Portsmouth who rarely lose at home are usually the toughest of nuts to crack, particularly with the atmosphere the fans can create down there.
But Liverpool are well capable of beating them. They have the better squad, better team and better manager.
The key is to ensure they are also in a better frame of mind because if they are it will give them every chance of securing one of those results which can define a season.

As you say its a test of our credentials. I am a little worried as the game is the early kick-off which must affect players (they have to change their eating and training times to accomodate). Its like an away game in Europe (its so far away). Last but not least its only 65 hours after the international games (and most of our players have been away).

It adds complications that if we win will prove we're serious contenders.

As champion designate,we should not give any excuse for not winning at fratton park against portsmouth. last weekend we saw how arsenal demolished them at the emirates.
liverpool's form is far better than their opponents. to be serious contenders, one must send some shock waves across the english premiership community
therefore giving excuses as to the time of the game and the mid week euro games,is sending out some fears that we are not upto date a strong side in premier.

A few of the fans are not happy about Rafa speaking out regularly about the flaws of the Premier League with regards to early kick-offs, etc but I'm in agreement with the manager.

As for the game ahead, this was the only one out of all the games in September that I wasn't sure we'd win. Fratton Park is never an easy place to go and given our track record there you'd expect it to be a bit difficult but I feel that we have our strongest squad since 2001 and have made our best start to the season in 11 years so I'd go as far as saying that we will pick up the three points because previous season's form isn't an excuse that we can hide behind, something Gérard Houllier regularly did.

Now is our time.
