Torres To Start At Reading Tonight

Posted by Tony Barrett on September 25, 2007 10:19 AM |

Rumour has it a certain Spanish striker will be in Liverpool's starting eleven tonight.
Can't work that one out for the life of me.
The League Cup is hardly our priority and it was only recently that Rafa Benitez was complaining about the pressures being placed on his top players, many of whom he fears are playing too many games.
So for our star striker to start a game of precious little significance after sitting out most of a crucial league game on Saturday flies in the face of common sense.
Unless........Torres wasn't rotated against Birmingham, he was dropped for playing so poorly in Porto the previous Tuesday.

That would be the only explanation that makes sense - play badly, miss out next time around and then work your way back to form in a less important fixture.
Whatever the answer, and only Rafa Benitez knows why he's made the decision, the problem is that team selection is being clouded by rotation.
If someone is dropped it'd be better for everyone if it was known that he has been dropped.
Then we wouldn't have to put up with yet another round of media ranting and raving about rotation undermining Liverpool's title chances.
Every single player loses form during the season and there is no shame in that so surely the manager can just say that "so and so hasn't been selected today because he hasn't been at his best".
Rotation may not be the problem that it seems to be but we will only know one way or another if communication is improved and the mystery is taken out of it.

If only you could write these columns in hindsight!!

In fairness I still agree with the point of the article. Torres & Carragher shouldnt have started and Gerrard should not have come on. Ideal opportunity to give a well-earned rest to 1st teamers whilst testing Hobbs, Putterill & Lindfield against decent opposition.

Priority has got to be the league and champions league. Use the league cup to give squad players a game and young lads a chance. Only way for them to ever prove themselves!
