Leave Styles Alone

Posted by Tony Barrett on August 21, 2007 9:52 AM |

Rob Styles made a mistake on Sunday, admittedly a bad one, but when it comes down to it all he committed was a human error.
I've got no doubt that Liverpool will benefit from similar human errors this season, as will every other team that plays football.
In my opinion, Styles is not a very good referee but he is certainly not biased or bent and he doesn't deserve to be the victim of crass innuendo simply because he is "on the board of a company which once did some work on Roman Abramovich's driveway".
The hysteria which now greets every single high profile mistake made by a Premiership referee is now well out of control.

And it isn't the fans who are driving it, it is the media which is becoming increasingly bloodthirsty in its desire to create controversy after controversy.
All this does is undermine referees and make their already hugely difficult job even harder than it should be.
I was gutted when Styles gave that penalty on Sunday. Firstly, because I knew it was never a foul and secondly, because I knew Liverpool should have long since put the game to bed by then.
His intervention gave Chelsea the chance to grab a point they did not deserve but so did Xabi Alonso's glaring miss in front of the Kop just a matter of minutes earlier.
Perspective is needed here. Rob Styles did not cost Liverpool the game. He certainly has not cost them a shot at the title. All he is guilty of is making a mistake.

well said Tony, name me one player who didn't make a mistake on Sunday? Great bit of perspective mate, rarely lacking these days too ...

How dare you be so damn reasonable. You'll end up giving football fans a good name.

What a load of rubbish! We'll see how your feelings are when Liverpool are pipped to the title in may by a lowsy 2 points.

It's not the mistake's that bother us a lot of the time, it's their "I'm the boss and whatever I say is right" attittude. He should never be allowed near a Liverpool game again and if he is I hope get's it good style from the fans and the players.

Well its no good going on about it you cant change the past and whats happened, what you can change though is the future - why not give the 4th official a bit more to do than split up fergie and Wenger when thay have a scrap, use his expertise on penalty decisions... the balance will even out over the season, look at the Villa game pre SG's goal.... cant believe how negative some comments are on here either - 2 points in it at the end of the season??? C'mon reds surely our squad deserves more hope than that!

I agree, you can't blame him for making a mistake. You have to blame the league powers for not introducing technology for game changing decisions. Penalties... offside goals should be scrutinised by 4th official watching replays. we know it works in rugby and we seen this year how it works in wimbledon. Allow each captain 3 decision challenges... problem solved. This would also make it easier for referees to punish divers and cheats. I think its a win win, anyone disagree?

I think it’s about time that fans of the English game stop being so naive or self rightgious and wake up and smell the coffee. As Tony rightly pointed out referees do make mistakes ( lets face it we have had our fair share of mistakes going for us over the years ) and the media do subject ref's to over hyped criticism but lets be clear on this. The decision witnessed on Sunday was very dubious. Match fixing goes on, most recently Italy provides us with examples of this. The Premier league has seen it before with the Han Segars affair and you only need to look at recent scandals such as Alladyce,Pini Zahvi et al to realise that it’s not the cleanest cut of leagues. Style's may have made a very bad mistake and may be perfectly innocent on this occasion however football is big business and I for one believe its time for us to acknowledge these high profile decisions and question the notion of match fixing. I am not a bitter red but feel questions should be raised. After all we were let off the hook by a bad decision in the Derby when Westerveld kicked the ball against an Everton forward. Just something to ponder....

great piece. fully agree.

gutted we did not win the game but at least the incident will hopefully let the club gather ranks and feel the world is against us (heinze, 12:45 fixtures etc) as a them and us attitude can be a fantastic motivation for any side.

Whilst i would not like to see it i think our being too nice to referee's goes against us - i dont doubt that the amount of pressure united and chavski put them under at any decision made swings things.

dangerous fixture this saturday after an international week so fingers crossed we get the rub of the green.
