Why I Hate England

Posted by Tony Barrett on July 8, 2007 10:55 AM |

I've always hated the England national team.
When I was a kid I supported Scotland even though I was brought up in Liverpool, not Livingston.
When Ray Houghton scored the winner for the Republic of Ireland against Bobby Robson's men in Euro 88 I danced around the living room as if Razor had just scored for the Reds.
When Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed those penalties against Germany I celebrated as much as any German.
And when Gareth Southgate repeated the trick to send England crashing out of Euro 96 I bought a bottle of champagne for me and my mates.

In fact, the only times when I've been even remotely interested in England were when Michael Owen scored that goal against Argentina - I cheered then because here was a young Liverpool player proving just how good he was on the international stage - and when Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher missed penalties against Portugal because I wanted anyone to miss but those two.
I don't know what it is but I've always hated England and wanted them to do badly.
There are many Liverpool fans who feel the same way, as proven by the "We're not English, we are Scouse" chant which is becoming increasingly popular with Reds, particularly at away games.
So with Jamie Carragher reportedly having been so scandalously forced out of the national set up I thought I'd come up with a list of my top ten reasons why I don't identify with the national team and why I will never offer any devotion to them.
Here goes:
1. The FA - where to begin here. But let's just say I have never and will never forgive them for the role they played in the Hillsborough disaster. How could I support a team which represents those men in blazers who helped create a situation which sent 96 Liverpool fans to their deaths?
2. London - The whole England thing is so London-centric they may as well replace the Three Lions with a picture of the Bow bells and ban any players who can't speak in rhyming slang.
3. Frank Lampard and Gary Neville - Not just these two but this pair do illustrate how ridiculous it is to support a team which contains players you hate.
4. The songs - Rule Britannia, God Save The Queen, etc, etc. The worst dirges I've ever heard. Can you honestly imagine singing them?
5. Nationalism and jingoism - Best illustrated by two more songs: No Surrender to the IRA and Two World Wars and One World Cup. For a start, I don't think the IRA were ever seeking the surrender of Steve from Slough and Nigel from Northampton and, anyway, would the Ingerlund boys ever have sung No Surrender on the Falls Road? I don't think so. The Two World Wars one is just plain offensive.
6. The booing of opposition national anthems - Let's get this right, they boo the Marseillais, Das Lied der Deutschen and The Soldiers Song but sing God Save The Queen. Is that not the equivalent of singing Barbie Girl and drowning out London Calling?
7. The treatment of John Barnes by England fans - Barnesy was my hero when I was a kid, in my eyes he was only ever bettered as a Liverpool player by King Kenny Dalglish himself. But the Cockney masses treated him like he wasn't fit to lace Glenn Hoddle's boots.
8. The managers - McClaren, Eriksson, Hoddle, Venables, Robson. What is there to like?
9. Injuries - How many times have Liverpool players gone away with England and come back injured? Barnes was the worst victim, picking up a career threatening Achilles injury whilst performing on behalf of fans who didn't even want him. And in recent years, the likes of Jamie Redknapp, Steven Gerrard, and Michael Owen have all been injured whilst on international duty.
10. The treatment of Liverpool players by the England management and fans - Barnes, Steve McManaman, Ray Clemence, Peter Crouch and, most recently Jamie Carragher, have all been treated disgracefully by either the management or fans. No doubt if they played for London clubs they would have been feted.
What do you think? Do you love England? Do you follow the national team and Liverpool?
Or do you agree with me that England should be left to the English?
Let me know.

Spot on

Balls to England, hope they don't qualify for 2008.

Too true. The way the England setup has behaved towards Carragher is nothing short of disgraceful. I'd be gutted if the manager chose Wes Brown over me. The England ethic is purely not to upset the London-based press and that gets put before the team.

Agree with a lot of the points you make (and I'm a brummie Liverpool fan, not scouse), as I've never identified with the national football team either. It always annoys me when people speak about players as though their first duty is to the national squad, and clubs should come second. I want any Liverpool players fit and ready for the club competitions, not dosing around with the Chelsea and Mancs singing 3 Lions.

That said, not sure why Robson was included in the list of shite hawk managers? I've always thought he was a top bloke and decent manager. Fair play with the others though.

Dave Evans wrote...

A lot of fans in Liverpool pick and choose when they are England fans. The 5-1 demolition of Germany a few years back was masterminded by three Liverpool players, a moment the scouse contingent truly embraced. Yet the series of inept performances which followed has again given Liverpudlians an opportunity to distance themselves from the national setup, further enhancing the widely-held belief that England fans are the most fickle followers in the land.
Although it's a trait most common on Merseyside, it's by no means exclusive.
The influx of foreign players in the Premiership has diluted the attitude of many club supporters. There was a time when great pride was felt when 'one of their own' was selected over many others to represent England.
Now, with fewer top class England players to select from, it is a sense of trepidation which is most felt.
Aside from the obvious injury possibility, there is also the prospect of humiliation - in that your world class player is overlooked in the national setup for an inferior player from your domestic rivals - the Carragher/Brown affair a typical example.
But this is nothing more than tactical negligence, not a crusade to ridicule the scouse representatives and their followers,
The pinnacle of a footballer's career is playing for his national side, as most will testify.
The likes of Jamie Carragher, however, put their club first. Maybe his consistent exlusion from the England first team is because the national team coaches recognise his commitment in an England shirt does not match those of his international colleagues. Terry Butcher et al have sweated blood for their country, 100 per cent commitment is what is required for the cause.
Liverpool fans have more reason than most to snub England. In recent times, their players return injured, depressed and even derided.
The England fans don't help. Along with the London media, they apportion too much pressure on the players.
Perhaps it's because the majority have had to endure the stories of '66 yet have seen little evidence that those glory heights can be recapured in their lifetimes.
Whatever the reason, those who choose to follow England should do so in the manner that Liverpool fans adopt when backing their club - 100 per cent true belief and pride.
But those who choose to ignore their national side should do so with a dignified silence.

As an Indian Origin it makes me feel so happy when I read such sentiments from Scousers. It makes me even more proud to be a Liverpool Fan and feel a stronger sense of belonging.

I am a Liverpool and was once an England supporter that was until I had the miss fortune to witness the absolutely appalling abuse Peter Crouch received from his own supporters when he made a substitute appearance against Poland a game which England won 2-1.

Even now having played only 19 games scoring an impressive 12 goals for his country he is still seen as some what of a joke by both our countries supporters and our own television pundits.

Is it any wonder our best players no longer want to be subject to this sort of treatment?

and I would be quite happy to lose Liverpool from England! You talk about dirge, what about the scouse accent? It is like a finger nail scraping down a blackboard! And here we go again blaming the FA for Liverpool fans mistakes. I suppose the trouble they caused accross Europe last season was someone elses fault was it? Boris Johnson got it right, you are all professional victims.

Quite agree with you. Scouser's should stay away from the England team.
Then at least we can watch England with out having to worry about being mugged off by some thieving scouse halfwit who would rob their own mother on her death bed if they had a chance.
Professional victim is a perfect description of what the people of Liverpool have become, it's never your fault is it ?
Lets not forget that the reason most of you do not follow England is that you are the spawn of feckless Irish immigrants who landed at Liverpool docks and could not be arsed to move on.

Here's hoping you and the Mancs stay true to your word (for once) and stay the hell away from the rest of us.

When you follow Liverpool FC, you don't need anything else.

For your own sake, Tony, make a start on getting that massive chip off your shoulder. There's a good lad. As others have already pointed out, you are merely confirming the stereotype of scousers as professional victims.

Jimbo wrote...

And about Carragher - what a petulant, spoilt brat (not to mention another scouse "victim"). The only proper response by the England manager would be to take Carragher's words at face value and not bother to contact him again. If Carragher no longer wants to play his part in the England squad, fine. But at least have the decency not to make a huge song and dance about it and subsequently throw a hissy fit on a radio station that is known to be little more than an agent provocateur.

It would be an absolute disgrace if McClaren crawled to Carragher, cap in hand, and begged him to return to the fold. Even more of a disgrace if Carragher subsequently found he was picked with more regularity.

The unfortunate truth for Carragher is that he is competing for his place with John Terry. Forget Rio Ferdinand. Carragher is no replacement for Rio. He hasn't the pace and a Terry / Carragher partnership would be horribly exposed in international football. A player such as Ledley King is a far better substitute for Ferdinand, when needed.

To the editor of this page:

In an earlier post, I pointed out that Tony was incorrect to say that 96 Liverpool fans were "sent to their deaths" at Hillsborough. The reason being that one of the 96 was, in fact, a Spurs fan.

What possible reason can you have had for deleting that? There was nothing remotely offensive about it. Are you not interested in the truth? Or would the knowledge that one of those tragically killed was not a Liverpool fan seriously threaten those Liverpool fans who prefer to claim a monopoly on victimhood?

It's a shame that you should lower yourself to such partisan and untruthful censorship.

Jimbo:

What an eloquent post. Amazingly though I get the feeling that if Carragher had pledged to fight for his positition.....you would mock him for "kidding himself".

If he accepted his position as a squad player, then he would be "accepting his lot as a bit part player".

So regardless of what he does, I think the place he comes from actually dictates your feelings towards his actions.

In fact, you are sounding more and more like a bitter manc.

Baresi rates him and he has played in two Champions league finals, so jog on!

I came to this article by searching for "liverpool fans who hate scousers" at google (just to see what i'd come up with) (coz there is so many of them I thought someone might have created a society). And I came to a Liverpool born Englisman who hates the English national team.

What the hell is it with Liverpool fans?

I'm an Evertonian from Liverpool. Proud to be English. Proud of the English national team, proud to be a scouser. I won't be moaning if Lescott, Neville, or Andy Johnson gets injured playing for England.

You won't have to worry anymore because your team is made up of foreigners. You must hate Spain with a passion. All your fans are foreigners or from devon. Your American owned. Liverpoolfc doesn't have that local pride like Everton. We have Baines, Jaglielka, Anichebe, Vaughan, Osman, Hibbert, Stubbs all local lads playin' for their local team. That's why we are called the "People's club". Carragher and Gerrard will be the last former-Evertonians playing for Liverpool and the last scousers. I'm sure the replacements will be Caragardo and Gerrardinho. Or some other foreign name.
