What About The Leg Room?

Posted by Tony Barrett on July 27, 2007 8:59 AM |

The artists impressions of Liverpool's new ground look fantastic and I can't wait for the stadium to be built.
But I'm sure I'm not the only Kop season ticket holder who got more than a little worried when Rick Parry said the seats in the new Kop will be "tightly packed".
What, even more tightly packed than the ones we are used to? Surely that would be impossible.
Sitting in the current incarnation of the Kop should come with a government health warning because everyone who does so (who stands over 5ft 6 anyway) risks lacerations of the shin or deep vein thrombosis.

Even if Parry meant the seats would "only" be as tightly packed as they are now that wouldn't be good enough.
Everything we have seen of the plans for the new stadium suggests the club are doing everything in their power to retain, and maybe even improve on, the famous Anfield atmosphere.
But there also needs to be better comfort for everyone, not just those who can afford to shell out how ever many thousands of Pounds it will cost for one of those bunker seats.
Increased leg room in the Kop is an absolute must. We can't continue to be cramped up in economy class whilst other fans are stretching their legs out and reclining in in club class.
I don't think my shins and knees will stand up to another ten years of battering in a stand that's fit for pygmies.

That was my first thought - I'm not as thin as I was when the old Kop was here, and even when the current one opened I felt it was a bit of a squeeze. I'm not even that tall compared to most of the younger matchgoers these days (not that I'm old or anything), and I still had my knees jammed into the seat in front.

That comment's the one that worried me the most.

Totally agree, me and my brother make my youngest brother sit in the middle, but he's 12 now so by the time he's 15 he's going to be a big lad like us two! I'm certain I already have indentations in my tibula's, check your own and feel the indentations!

Have you noticed how each generation of Liverpool lads is taller and skinnier than the one before? I reckon it's down to evolution - we've been adapting so more of us could fit in the old standing Kop. It'll take time, but eventually we'll be producing lads who're built more like Jimmy Crankie, so they can fit in the seats.
