The Scouse Accent

Posted by Tony Barrett on July 9, 2007 2:54 PM |

We're about to launch a new project at the Echo in celebration of the Scouse accent.
It's one of a number of ways we're toasting Liverpool as the city celebrates its 800th birthday and approaches Capital of Culture year.
We want people to get involved because it'd be pretty pointless if everything was led by a load of journalists and marketing people.
So if any of you have any favourite Scouse words of phrases - they could be from now or from years gone by - let us know what they are.
Absolutely anything goes. All you have to do is add a comment to this blog and we'll pick them up.

Where do you think the Scouse accent is strongest? North or South Liverpool?
Can people who live in places like Kirkby and Bootle be classed as Scousers even though they live outside the city boundaries?
Who's got the best Scouse accent you've ever heard?
Whatever your views on anything to do with the Scouse accent let us know. And don't forget to tell us what your favourite Scouse words and phrases are.

Why do some scousers, myself included, say the "The Asda". We dont say 'The Sainsburys', or 'The Tesco', but for some unknown reason us scousers have singled out this supermarket and chosen to put 'the' before it.
Where did this start?

I would just like to make a particular comment about the idea of a Scouse accent and the potential problems that might occour if you start being all precious about who is one and who isn't. Think of the Cockney 'sound of the Bow bells' preciousness.

I'm just thinking about the great pride that people have in both having the accent and coming from the City. I would suggest that, in particular, the people of Kirkby are most definately able to claim Scousership, if you look at where the place was populated by. I'm reminded of the African/Irish 'Diasporas' and for their reasons, and in comparison, why the Scousers are spread across the world. I've got relatives in Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand (and possibly other places as well by now)and all would claim their own Scouse heritage-we don't possess a World Heritage site status just for the buildings- and by definition their Scouse accent, albeit corrupted by the necessities of communicating with the natives. They're soon back into it when you talk to them over the 'phone, or on that rare visit.

examples? Having once again, going against my own wishes, been drawn into the antics of Big Brother, there's the seeming incredulity by other inmates of the Two Twins using the phrase'deffo'

'The gear' springs to mind as well, but I don't know if it's wholly local/Scouse.

I've got to nominate Jan Molby's as the best Liverpool accent.
