I can't understand how so many people in this country are up in arms about a player saying he no longer wishes to be fifth choice centre half for England.
It's not as if he is depriving them of his services, Steve McClaren has done that since he became manager.
And I can't remember any "Carra must play" campaign because so many Ingerlund fans felt so strongly that he should represent his country.
All he has done is state that he no longer wishes to clock up more air miles than Alan Whicker, going to places like Estonia in the forlorn hope that only one from John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate is fit and he might actually get a game.
Carragher is a father of two who quite rightly puts his young family at the very top of his priorities.
But he has always been prepared to make personal sacrifices when his country came calling, even though he has long known the chances of him being selected in his proper position were virtually nil.
The final straw no doubt came when he was sat on the bench in Estonia watching King play centre half with Ferdinand out injured.
This came after a gruelling season with Liverpool which only ended with the Champions League final on May 23. Two and a half weeks away from his family later and he has to sit and endure another England performance which he was to play no part in.
What would you do in the same circumstances? Carry on banging your head against the same brick wall that's been in front of you for eight years or walk away from it?
I know what I'd do and it wouldn't involve playing second fiddle to Ledley King.
