The Protest

Posted by Tony Barrett on May 14, 2007 10:12 AM |

IT was heartfelt, it was dignified and, most of all, it was unprecedented.
Yesterday afternoon, around 400 Liverpool fans did something which has never happened in the history of the club - they launched a protest against it.

Most of those who took part were season ticket holders and fan card holders. Most of them go to the majority of Liverpool's away games, whether the first team are playing or whether Rafa has rotated again and come up with a side made up of the not good enough, the potentially good enough and the reserves.
And most of them haven't got a ticket for the European Cup final.
They were protesting because their loyalty has not been repaid and they want to know why.
Frustration took them onto the streets as they sought to let the club they love know that many, many fans are currently feeling disgusted at the way they have been treated ahead of what should be another joyous European final.
Such scenes of protest may be an almost regular occurrence at some clubs, but I can't ever remember seeing anything like it at Liverpool - before yesterday.
In the past, the supporters have been so compliant and so trusting of the board to get things right that they have preferred to suffer in silence rather than put on a public display of disgust.
It will have been a huge eye-opener for George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who since buying the club earlier this year have spent much of their time showering the supporters with superlatives as it dawned on them what a special club they had acquired.
But today they are going to have to deal with dissesnsion and disgust. Coming from the land where "the customer is always right" may as well be part of their constitution, they will be acutely aware that upsetting the hard core of your "customer base" just isn't on.
The American duo will know they have to react. Doing nothing is simply not an option when so many fans are so very angry.
The first thing they should do is announce a full review of the way Liverpool's loyalty card system works because at the moment it loads the odds against far too many people who have the club etched into their heart and soul.
If they do this then it might just placate some of those who have unfairly missed out on a ticket for Athens.
They will still be unhappy at missing one of the biggest games in Liverpool's history, of course, but the knowledge that the club are at least showing a desire to change things for the future might at least calm things down.
Secondly, they need to come out fighting in defence of those they have taken to calling "the twelfth man" by telling UEFA that Liverpool FC will no longer tolerate seeing its fans being treated like second class citizens by European football's governing body.
If the club do not make a stand and call for a greater share of tickets in future finals then the problem is never going to go away.
No-one who marched in protest yesterday afternoon wanted to do so but they were compelled to do so by a situation which is so unfair it beggars belief.
Now they have made their feelings known it is down to the club to act - or risk alienating those who love them most for ever.
