Just heard from a very reliable source that there is a very prominent Liverpool businessman who has ten tickets for the final.
He is an Evertonian.
The man in question is not a tout, he got hold of his tickets because he has an executive box at Anfield.
Obviously, he has broken no laws and his annual rental of a box gives him as much right to tickets as any of the other box holders.
But if anything highlights the flaws of football's ongoing love in with all things corporate it's this.
Here is a man who has no love for Liverpool Football Club, who only involves himself with them for business purposes and who apparently has no intention of going to Athens for the final.
And yet he has been presented with 10 tickets with which he can do as he pleases.
Hopefully he has ten deserving, Liverpool supporting friends who missed out in the ballot and he has done the right thing by them.
But there is nothing forcing him to do so.
He could just as easily pass the tickets on to 10 business contacts who also have no real interest in Liverpool to curry favour with them.
And for all we know, there could be several other box holders in a similar position to him.
This situation goes to the very heart of the ticketing problem - far too many tickets are handed out to corporates before real fans are given a chance to get their hands on them.
Unless this problem is tackled and solved the Athens debacle will be repeated next year in Moscow and the year after in Rome.
But there must be the will
The clubs involved and UEFA have to come to realise that genuine fans should be given every opportunity to attend showpiece occasions and not be excluded simply because they are not part of the corporate family.
And unless this happens we will have to get used to businessmen who support other clubs getting hold of tickets for our biggest games.
